This Wednesday, Feb 15th, we are hosting the Eastern Ontario High School races, so the trails will be closed to the public until 3 p.m. Tomorrow I will be removing some of the classic track and laying out the course so if you encounter red ribbons across a trail please don't remove them. I will try to put the track back in as soon as possible after the race.

We had a major ski trail improvement bee last weekend. The entry area, stadium, and start of green and the finish are all leveled and with drainage tile installed.

Went out for a last ski today along with a few other people. A beautiful day and the trails were still skiable. Just a few bare patches appearing. So we had about 100 days of skiing this year. Probably a record. Hope you all had a good season and look forward to next year. I am planning a new trail to keep things interesting!

Spring Skiing - Enjoy it while it lasts !

Well we didn't have much snow in the end, not more than 5 cm, but it was enough to make a difference to the trails. So, following a cold night, the trails were groomed today.
All were groomed for skating (10km) and the blue was trackset (5km). The skating is excellent, the classic track is a bit icy, but not bad. I will continue to groom the skating into the weekend. Can't see much change in the temperatures so it's not going anywhere. We've had 87 days of good skiing this winter, wonder if we can make it 100.

We will be taking advantage of the remaining snow on the ground by making up for the missed lesson on January 23rd.
Therefore, this Sunday (Feb 27th) will be the last “official” lesson and Sunday March 6th will be the fun day/wrap-up.

Conditions are still great, but will deteriorate over the week with the warm weather. There is still lots of coverage as of today, so get in the last skiing as the weather is warm for the near future. Grooming will be occasional, with icy mornings and slushy afternoons.

The marathon was a great success and was a beach like atmoshphere for the 20 or so participants. Tristan Woodfine skied 70k in super warm conditions, approaching the old guy record set in previous marathons of 78 and 75k.

Ski school is up and running with close to 50 kids again this year. We need more volunteers, however, of all ages and abilities! We need help with getting skis on, getting groups moving, and overall crowd control. Sundays, 2pm.

Women's skate ski clinic Jan. 23

We've planned an exciting event for PAXC women. On Sat. Jan. 23 we're providing a women's skate-ski clinic for beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers. Lessons will be from 12:30 to 1:30, followed by practice time and then refreshments in the club house. (The advanced lessons would include techniques for hill-climbing and one-skate, two-skate and off-set poling.)The cost is $10. To register please call Tammy at Gearheads at 687-4624 by Jan. 19. Come on out to improve your skills, meet new skiers and have fun.

Kid's ski school

Hello Ski Kids, Parents & Guardians! 2010 PAXC Ski School will be starting back up in just over a month. Please read the following to make sure that you and your kids are prepared!

We have a good group of instructors and organizers this year but please keep in mind that we are all volunteers and could really use your help to make the 2010 season a very successful one!

Dates: Ski School will run for a total 8 weeks on every Sunday starting January 10th, with the wrap-up session on February 28th. The class on the 28th will be a fun day for the kids. March 7th may be used as an alternate fun-day/wrap-up if we miss a week of lessons due to weather or if some other issue comes up.

Time: All lessons begin at 2pm. Please make sure you have your children there early enough so they are ready (skis on!) at 2pm. The kids will be back to the clubhouse for snacks and hot chocolate by 3pm.

Registration: Registration will start at 1:15pm January 10th. Please register on-line in advance if possible (Zone4 link on right). You can still register and make your payment at the clubhouse, however, to expedite the process, please print and fill in the attached registration form. New this year: all kid's need a parent/guardian as a PAXC member (for insurance coverage).

Parent Volunteers: We need your help! We had a record 50 kids registered for ski school last year and we are anticipating that number again this year - if not more! We have a group of dedicated volunteers to instruct your children, but we need your help as well. We are asking that all parents/guardians sign up for a minimum of 2 sundays to volunteer their time. There will be a number of jobs including the clubhouse "Den Parent & helper", as well as assisting on skis with some of the younger groups. Katie Plaunt will be organizing the parent volunteers and she will have a calendar on registration day. Please check your schedule and come prepared to commit to helping out for a couple of Sundays. Appropriate Gear: Please make sure that your child is prepared for the conditions. We recommend that they dress in layers and they have a spare set of mitts and socks on hand. In addition, if your kids skis need to be waxed, please have them waxed prior to the lessons.

The online version is the preferred method, as it saves volunteer hours in data entry, but the paper / mail in still exists. You can click and print the image and mail to the address on the form.

Many thanks to Brian for his dedication and time over these past years; our club has grown and the quality of skiing has improved immensely. The good news is that we are not cutting him loose. He is now officially the trail guy, while I take over the club presidency.
The heart of our club is volunteers and their amazing investment of time and energy. If you have an idea you would like to spearhead or see happen, please let me know. If an event comes up that you think you could help out with – the more the merrier. In particular ski school – we need not only group instructors, but people who just want to help little people ski (more on that below).
Some new developments and plans for this year:
1. We’re piloting an online registration system this year. You can renew your membership (and pay) online at the following link: http://www.zone4.ca/register.asp?id=786 Kid’s ski school can register here as well. The traditional paper membership form is still available to mail in, however we encourage the online format. Steve Bursey and Alicia Berthiume are now in charge of membership.
2. Our primary communication channel will be the online blogsite http://paxc.blogspot.com/ and we will steer away from email as much as possible. Trail updates and social events will be posted there.
3. Kid’s Ski School was a smashing success last year with 50 kids. Such success needs adult volunteers – lots of them! The ski school committee is meeting to finalize the dates and details (it will still run Sundays starting in January), but more instructors and helpers are needed for all ages. You don’t need to be a ski instructor quality skier to help – the whole thing is about getting kids out in the snow to have some fun. Parents of Ski School Kids are asked to commit to volunteering at least 2 sessions of the eight (if not all of them!). There are many on and off snow duties to fulfill. More details on ski school will follow in early December.
4. High school racing: last year we (again) hosted the Eastern Ont. qualifying race. 125 students appreciated our club’s volunteers and race organization, and we’ll do it all again this year (Feb. 10).
5. Social committee: expect more of the good things from last year: a moonlight ski, a women’s ski social, and a family day fun day (Feb. 15). Details will be on the blogsite as they near.
6. Snowshoe trail: we will formalize the summer bike trails into a marked snowshoe trail this winter.
7. Ski hats: we have medium weight PAXC ski toques ($20) this year. They will be available at the social events or contact me directly. Adult sizes and black only.

That's all. The groomer is officially in storage (both the machine and the person). Thanks to Brian, again, for his great work through out the season. Our membership was one of the biggest this year, with 250 members.

Yes, you can still ski, but the conditions are certainly 'late spring'. Expect to see water, dirt, and mud sections. There are also reports of a tree down. It will stay there until next fall!

1: Family Day Scavenger Ski Hunt

Monday, Feb. 16 (Family Day), 10am to 2pm
Parent/kid teams will ski the green, blue or orange trail and stop at stations along the way. Making it to all the stations on your trail gets a family prize! Hot chocolate and chili to follow.
Every team needs at least one parent/adult and one child, but more of each are welcome. For those who want to participate but do not have skis, they can be rented from Petawawa’s Jubilee Lodge for a minimal fee (687-5511 x5180).

fun race

A great turn out for sprint fun race #1! Stay tuned for more dates later in Feb.

The first of PAXC's fun skate races will be next Sunday, Jan. 18, 10:30 in the morning. Entry is free, just show up ready for a short relay style or elimination style skate race (1k or less!). Open to all abilities looking for a fun workout. We hope to have a new sprint loop open by then - join us to check it out.

Master's National Championships in North Bay!

The National Master's Championships are being held in North Bay this year, Feb. 24 to Mar. 1. It alternates east to west every year, so take advantage of the ideal location! For those who have never skied in N Bay, this is a great way to see their stellar trails, and get whupped by some seriously fit old guys and gals. Open to anyone 30+ in age.

Our 10 Km skate race will be on Sunday February 8th, the day after Deep River's Silver Spoon race.

EOSSA, the high school race will be held on Wednesday February 11th, (OFSSA is in Midland, Feb 26th & 27th).

New Grooming Machine

Those who attended the Annual meeting got their first look at our new snowmobile groomer purchased with the Trillium Grant that we were recently awarded. For those of you who couldn't make the meeting here is a picture of it. It's an Alpina Sherpa, 4 stroke, 4 cylinder, 1400 cc, double track machine, made in Italy. We have erected a temporary storage shed to house it and it will be on the trails in a day or two.

Ian Pineau has offered to conduct 3 adult ski lessons on 3 Saturdays - February 2nd, 16th and 23rd from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is for either skate or classical technique whether you're just starting out or just want to improve. Ian teaches at Algonquin College and is a certified ski instructor.
Cost is $20 for the 3 sessions for club members. ($45 for non-members).

After an early start on Nov. 23, the last dump has brought excellent skiing - we've not had an early winter like this in a long time. Thanks to Brian the trails are wide and smooth, including the classic track, similar to March conditions. You can put away your rock skis.

NEWSLETTER for Nov 2007

With snow on the ground it's time to start thinking about the upcoming ski season. I don't have to tell you all that last year was a little bit difficult! Nevertheless we managed to hold all the planned races and ski school events in spite of the lack of snow.

This year we should be in better shape, the trails are not as wet and a lot of work has been done to make them smoother and wider. The swamp crossing on the blue loop had to be relocated due to the activities of beavers further downstream. The new route should be easier to ski and maintain.

A new groomer has been ordered from Tidd-Tech in Colorado and should arrive in early December. This equipment should make for more effective management of the snow we do get.

Our successful running of EOSSA last year has ensured that we have been asked to do it again this year and it seems there will be even more schools involved. That event is scheduled for Wed. Feb 20th.

We will be holding a 10Km skate race again the day after the Silver Spoon on Sunday Feb 9th and we may have a competitive event on Monday Feb 18th (new holiday) if there is enough interest.

Jackrabbit Ski School classes will start Jan 6th and run every Sunday at 2 p.m. until Mar 2nd except for for Feb 9th (race day).We have had to raise some of our fees this year due to increased cost of insurance and CCC membership but they are still very reasonable.

New membership form is attached but if you have trouble opening them let me know and I'll mail you one.Please complete the form and mail to Jeff Jackson as soon as you can.

EOSSA race report Feb. 14

Feb. 14 saw PAXC hosting the Eastern Ontario qualifying race for high school nordic ski racers to go to the provincial finals in North Bay. Over 50 high school athletes raced in the -15 temperatures to represent their school. Schools from Almonte, Arnprior, Renfrew, Pembroke and Deep River were represented.
Fellowes HS took the girls relay race, made up of PAXC members, and Mackenzie took the boys race. Strong individual performances were put in by Melissa and Ben Jones and Sarah and Dani Buckner, Leonie Coleman, among many others.

10 Km Freestyle Race Report.

Despite minimal snow conditions the 10 Km Freestyle Race was an outstanding success with 30 competitors of all ages taking part. Conditions were fast and some excellent times were posted. Congratulations go out to Stephen Bursey, Alicia Berthiaume, Jon Dumouchel, Danielle Buckner, Naomi Jones-Whyte, Tristan Woodfine, Ramsay Jones-Whyte and Krista Buckner who all took 1st place in their respective categories. We hope this race will become an annual event to go along with the Silver Spoon in Deep River.

Racing:
Jan. 1 is our first club fun race of the year - burn off some holiday hang over! Details to follow, format depending on conditions...

Feb. 4 is our 'big' event of the year, a day of skate ski races - a perfect compliment to the Silver Spoon event (Deep River) the day before. Plan on this to make to a great race weekend. Skiers from across the Valley are invited to attend.

Mar. 4 is the last race, in a fun format to suit all abilities. Last year's relay was a nail biter. Lots of sun, laughs and good cheer.

Kid's Ski School:
Planned as a full winter program, details are to follow pending the parents and leadership's planning.

Socials:
Impromptu, plus moonlight skis and other happenings as they evolve. Stay tuned for details here or posted at the clubhouse.

PAXC annual general meeting

Nov. 14 the club convened for our annual (and only) meeting to plan the year. Brian is staying on as el Presidente and trail manager, as is Jeff treasurer and memberships. The Buckner family has volunteered for the social event coordinators, and Jeff has volunteered to organize the club races. Kid's ski school is on, but pending a meeting of parents and volunteers to organize a schedule. It is the club's intention to run 8 sessions for kids this year, but we need more parents to step up and take a role in making them happen.
The club also intends to host the Eastern Ont. high school ski race that qualifies local athletes to compete at the provincial finals (mid Feb.).
Hope for a good snow year!

Forest Lea logging over summer

You may not recognize parts of the Forest Lea trails this year, as logging operations have significantly altered the landscape. The downside is that some areas are now very open (and will be for the next couple of winters), but some of the trails have been turned to roads, which will make grooming easier and smoother. Some of the trails will be altered to accomodate. A new concern for this year is the amount of water on the ground. Hopefully we will get some cold before the snow falls, so it freezes solid to support the trails. The photo is a clear cut along the orange trail.
